Jamie and Jared's Luscious, “Fecund”, Disco Wedding

Jamie and Jared had a lovely destination wedding in Chicago, filled with subtle, yet romantic nods to their relationship. Living in LA, they chose to host their wedding in Chicago because not only was it where Jamie was born, but it was also a perfect middle ground for families coming from both the east and west coast. They knew they needed to hire an event planner to assist from afar.

“We want our wedding to represent our fun side, feature our inside jokes and favorite things. We want our guests to have fun with us, rather than being just viewers to our big day.”

The overall theme was “fecund and overgrown,’ with lush greenery interspersed with pops of color, but to incorporate more of their fun personality, the color palette was inspired by a can of Graft's Field Day cider—one of their favorite beverages. Disco balls were even included to pay tribute to Studio 54—as they met at a Studio 54 themed party. The Fairlie became a perfect space, because it’s an easy venue to customize your needs. The high ceilings and the staircase alone elevate the space!

When selecting how to conduct the ceremony, they wanted to integrate both of their beliefs, therefore, having a Unitarian minister—and keeping with both Jewish and African-American tradition—a glass was broken, and a broom was jumped over at the conclusion of the ceremony.

The vibe shifted during the reception into a party! There was charcuterie, cakes inspired by art, a live funk band, attire changes, and a surprise drum performance by Jared. It was a very personal celebration for the both of them!

WHAT WAS FIERCE ABOUT THIS WEDDING:

  • The cakes by Azucar Rococo were inspired by Wayne Thiebaud’s Cake Windows (Seven Cakes).

  • They hired a live funk band! The best part: Jared surprised Jamie by playing 'Hey Ya' by Outkast on the drums!

  • They rented a beautiful lounge for guests to relax during the wedding.

  • The venue featured a "ring wall" where they hung photos of their grandparents, parents, and siblings from their wedding days as a way to pay tribute to the unity of the two families.
